Hellish Reptiles / Crested Gecko Genetics
Morph Catalog.
Every proven gene, super form, allelic combination, line-bred pattern and base color — with visual ID, upsides, downsides, health notes and breeding advice.
Normal (Wild Type)
The baseline crested gecko: a brown, olive or tan base with modest cream dorsal pattern, tiger-like banding and a dark headstamp. Every morph is measured against it.
Lilly White
A high-white incomplete dominant gene. One copy produces bold white blocks on the sides, a white dorsum, white 'socks' and a white tail at hatch. Two copies (Super Lilly White) are lethal.
Super Lilly White
The two-copy form of Lilly White. It is the only confirmed lethal homozygous form in crested geckos and should never be bred for.
Axanthic
A recessive gene that removes yellow and red pigment. Visual axanthics are grey, charcoal, silver, black and white — the pattern stays, the warmth disappears.
Axanthic (Obscurial line)
An independent axanthic line. Because it appears to be a different mutation, Obscurial × other-line axanthic may produce only normal-looking double hets.
Cappuccino
An incomplete dominant gene and the first member of the Cappuccino/Sable/Highway allelic complex. Hets are healthy dark animals with a connected dorsal pattern and a bright white tail base.
Super Cappuccino
The two-copy Cappuccino, often called 'melanistic'. Visually dramatic — solid dark, reduced crests and fine silky skin — but linked to reduced nostrils and breathing problems.
Sable
An incomplete dominant gene at the same locus as Cappuccino and Highway. Sables are dark brown, black or grey with crisp white dorsal patterning; the super form appears healthy.
Super Sable
Near-melanistic with a creamy dorsum, velvet-like textured scales, a skull-shaped headstamp and bold eye reticulation. Unlike Super Capp, its nostrils form normally.
Highway
The third allele in the Cappuccino/Sable complex. Hets show deep orange blushing, reduced head crests and pinstripes that bleed inward over time.
Super Highway
Resembles Super Cappuccino but with normal eyes. Reduced nostrils and declining health after maturity make it ethically difficult to produce.
Soft Scale
A structural incomplete dominant trait: finer, more spaced scales that give a matte, velvety skin and often richer-looking color. The super form exaggerates the effect.
Super Soft Scale
The homozygous Soft Scale: an even finer, more matte, suede-like skin with intensified color.
Phantom
A recessive melanin-blending trait. Phantom suppresses flame/harlequin pattern color and produces the patternless, bicolor, buckskin, cream and tan looks.
Red Base
Brick-red to deep red base color. Foundation Genetics models it as recessive; hets may show a reddish cheek blush.
Dalmatian
Black, red or green-black spots of varying size on any base. Spot count typically increases with age, and two copies give heavier spotting.
Super Dalmatian
Very heavily spotted animals, commonly defined as 100+ spots. Expected more often from Dalmatian × Dalmatian pairings.
Pinstripe
Raised dorsal scale rows separating the dorsum from the sides, usually highlighted cream or white. Full (unbroken) or partial (broken).
Quadstripe
A full dorsal pinstripe plus two additional lateral stripe rows. Quadstripe is only visible when Pinstripe is also present.
Empty Back
A pinstriped animal whose dorsum clears and darkens between the pins, making the back look 'empty'. Two copies give extensive clearing.
Super Empty Back
Extensive dorsal clearing — a wide, dark channel with crisp pinstripes and minimal pattern elsewhere.
Pixel
A recessive trait that scatters the pattern into fine, pixel-like static across the body.
Fire
An emerging incomplete dominant gene that washes out the color in single-copy animals. Two copies produce the Black-Eyed Leucistic (Blizzard).
Blizzard (Black-Eyed Leucistic)
White with yellow retention and solid black eyes — the homozygous Fire form.
Luwak
Cappuccino and Sable on the same locus. The dorsal stripe is suppressed but visible, color is more uniform, and scales are velvety. Smaller nostrils and compromised crests are reported.
Cappuccino Highway
Cappuccino and Highway alleles together. Some animals show nostril reduction and breathing difficulty.
Highway Sable
Highway and Sable alleles combined (sometimes called 'Mable'). Dark, warm-toned and, unlike the Capp compounds, without documented health issues.
Frappuccino
Cappuccino plus Lilly White. Expect dark coffee tones broken by brilliant Lilly White blocks — one of the most popular designer combos.
Phantom Frappuccino
A Frappuccino that is also visual Phantom, giving softer, smoky patterning around the white blocks.
Sorak
Super Cappuccino carrying Lilly White. Visually extreme, but it carries all Super Cappuccino welfare concerns.
Axanthic Lilly White
Monochrome Lilly White: charcoal to silver base with pure white blocks and no warm tones.
Axanthic Phantom
Two recessives together: smoky, low-contrast monochrome. Double het × double het gives 1 in 16.
Charcoal
Visual Axanthic with Empty Back: a dark charcoal channel framed by grey-white pinstripes.
Phantom Pinstripe
Raised pinstripe scales with Phantom's muted color — looks patternless or bicolor until you see the raised rows.
Cappuccino Phantom
Cappuccino with visual Phantom: dark, smoky and very low pattern; tongues often near-black.
Tangerine Lilly White
Lilly White blocks set against an orange-to-pink Tangerine body.
Patternless
One solid color over the whole body with no dorsal or lateral pattern.
Bicolor
A dorsum one shade lighter or darker than the sides, without lateral pattern.
Buckskin
Soft tan-brown 'buckskin' coloring with little pattern — common in phantom lines.
Flame
Cream or colored dorsal pattern with little or no pattern on the sides or legs.
Harlequin
Dorsal pattern plus pattern on the sides and legs; coverage ranges from moderate to heavy.
Extreme Harlequin
Harlequin pattern extending far into the upper sides, often touching the dorsum and covering the legs.
Super Harlequin / XXX
Pattern covering roughly 80% or more of the body. Super/XXX are descriptors of coverage, not genetics.
Tiger
Darker vertical bands running from the back down the sides.
Super Tiger
Exaggerated, dense striping covering the body.
Brindle
Fragmented, irregular banding forming a marbled or broken-stripe look.
Tricolor
Three distinct colors — typically a red or dark base with orange and cream/white pattern.
Halloween
True black base with orange pattern and minimal or no white or yellow.
Whitewall
Thick, clean white on the lower sides at hatch, forming a 'wall' up toward mid-lateral. Reported to behave like an incomplete dominant (Whiteout = lighter form), but still treated as line-bred until proven.
Moonglow
Near-unicolor white to cream animals produced from high-white lines.
Portholes
Round white spots on the sides that grow as the animal matures.
Kneecaps
White patches on the knees and elbows.
Crowned
Cream or pattern color covering the top of the head between the crests.
Drippy Dorsal
Dorsal pattern that 'drips' down the sides in thin vertical streaks.
Furred
Tiny white specks scattered over dark scales, giving a 'furry' texture.
Superstripe
Thick pattern along the pinstripe with a darker line in the middle, widening toward the spine.
Reverse Pinstripe
The pinstripe scales are base-colored while the surrounding area is pattern-colored — the opposite of a normal pin.
Ink Spot
Large, clustered Dalmatian spots that look like ink blots.
Red Spot Dalmatian
Dalmatian spots in red instead of black.
Tangerine
Adds orange, peach or pink saturation to pattern and base; stronger lines are called Hyper Tangerine.
Cold Fusion
A lineage and trait giving a bluish, 'cold' tone — strongest as dark base + hypo + Cold Fusion, fired down.
Dark / Black Base
Dark base ranging from chocolate to near pitch black; judged fired up near the ear. Dominant base.
Red
Brick red to deep red base, often with cream or orange pattern.
Orange
Bright orange base, often from yellow base + red base combinations.
Yellow
Golden to bright yellow base; naturally reduces melanin.
Cream
Pale cream base; 'Cream' is often yellow base + Phantom.
Lavender
Grey-lilac base, usually fired down; dark base + hypo.
Olive
Green-brown olive base.
Pink
Pinkish base, common in older red/hypo animals.
Citrus
Bright, low-melanin yellow (term from ACR).
No morphs match those filters.
