Description
Highlights
- For Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila hydei
- Fortified with vitamins and minerals
- About 1/4 cup of powder per 32 oz culture
- 18 oz (510 g) jar
Lugarti fruit fly culture media is a powdered diet for breeding flightless fruit flies. It works for both Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila hydei. It is made with potato flour, brewer’s yeast and fruit. In addition, it is fortified with vitamins and minerals for strong egg production and a long-lived culture.
Fruit flies are a staple for dart frogs, small geckos, hatchling chameleons and other tiny insect eaters. However, a culture is only as nutritious as what the flies eat. As a rule, one jar makes a good run of 32 oz cultures. Also add excelsior for the flies to climb and pupate on. Then keep the cultures warm, as described below.
Directions
To make a 32 oz deli container, add 4 tablespoons (1/4 cup) of powder to 2/3 cup of hot water and stir until evenly blended. Add water or powder to adjust consistency. Tap the container bottom on a table to flatten out the media and allow to cool before adding excelsior and flies. NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.
Store cultures between 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit. D. melanogaster should produce flies within 14 days. D. hydei should produce flies within 21 days.

Keeper notes
Start new cultures every week or two, so you always have one at its peak. After all, a single culture produces for only a few weeks. Keep Lugarti fruit fly culture media closed and dry between uses. Also throw out any culture that turns moldy or smells sour. Finally, the flies still need dusting with a supplement before you feed them off.
