Highlights
- All natural aspen wood fiber
- Gives fruit flies room to climb and pupate
- Sold by the gallon
- Makes about 20 fruit fly cultures
Excelsior for fruit fly cultures is fine aspen wood fiber, the classic material for building a culture. Pressed into the culture on top of the media, it gives the flies far more surface to climb, rest and pupate on, which means more flies per cup.
One gallon makes about 20 fruit fly cultures. Add a loose handful to each 32 oz cup once the media has cooled, then add the flies and close the cup with a vented lid.
Note
Sold by the gallon. Each gallon makes approx. 20 fruit fly cultures.
Keeper notes
Use excelsior for fruit fly cultures loosely: fluffed up, it gives the flies more surface to climb than a packed wad. Press the lower end lightly into the media so it holds in place, but leave most of it above the surface. Keep the bag closed and dry between uses, because damp excelsior can carry mold into new cultures. Excelsior also works as a climbing surface in springtail and isopod cups. Store the bag away from your cultures, so stray flies and mites do not move into it.
