Lugarti sphagnum moss is sustainably harvested from wetlands in southern Chile, carefully separated and sun-dried. The long fibers are very soft and hold large amounts of water.
It is one of the most useful things to keep on hand: damp in a humid hide to help a gecko or snake shed, in a lay box for egg-laying females, as a living-looking top layer over bioactive soil, or for mounting orchids, bromeliads and carnivorous plants. Rehydrate it in water and squeeze it out before use.
Keeper notes
Soak Lugarti sphagnum moss in clean water for a few minutes, then wring it out until it is damp rather than dripping, because soaking-wet moss in a hide can lead to skin problems and mold. Replace the moss in hides and lay boxes regularly, since it holds waste and bacteria once soiled. For amphibians, use dechlorinated water. A little goes a long way: once rehydrated, one bag fills many hides and lay boxes. Long-fiber moss also wraps well around the roots of epiphytes when you mount them on cork or wood.
