Lugarti bioactive reptile soil, tropical blend, mixes sphagnum peat moss, organic compost, oak leaf litter and fir bark. It also contains horticultural charcoal, milled sphagnum moss, fine sand and natural clay. The blend is made for crested geckos, day geckos, tree frogs, dart frogs and other rainforest species. In addition, it holds the moisture these enclosures need while still supporting live plants.
However, a bioactive soil only works as a system. First comes a drainage layer, then a separator mesh, then 4 to 5 inches of soil. Next, add leaf litter on top and a clean-up crew of isopods and springtails. The crew breaks down waste. Built that way, the enclosure stays fresh and gives the animals room to dig and forage. Females also often lay their eggs in the soil.

Instructions for Use
The Tropical blend is best used with a Drainage Layer and a suitable Separation Layer to prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged, which will foster bacteria. After you’ve added the drainage feature, place a minimum of 4” – 5” of moistened bioactive soil on top of the separation layer and lightly pack down. Add live plants and incorporate other habitat features (e.g. rocks, branches, cork bark, etc.) for the most naturalistic setup. Adding a thin layer of Sphagnum Moss or Sheet Moss on top of the soil as a “carpet” will enhance the natural look and help retain humidity. Lastly, add your clean-up crew and Biodegradables (Leaf Litter, Dead Wood Lichen, Seed Pods, etc.). These will provide a food source for your clean-up crew which will naturally break down and enrich the soil, nourishing the live plants. Be sure to install proper lighting to help ensure your live plants thrive.
Keeper notes
Moisten Lugarti bioactive reptile soil before you fill the enclosure. Then, if you can, let the plants and clean-up crew settle in for a few weeks. After that, the animal can move in. Keep the soil damp but never waterlogged. In fact, water pooling in the drainage layer means you are watering too much.
